Applying the Clay to Foam.

The first step to completing the heroic size statue at this point is to apply a thin layer of clay on the foam armatures.  This gives you a base from which to work to do your modeling.  After the sculpture has  a thin layer of clay, you start adding mass or removing mass where needed.  This process continues until you have the form which identifies the detail of the final sculpture.  The modeling process is very time consuming and requires high attention to detail.

Once the details of the form are completed, you then add clothing, or in the case of the animals, hair, fur or wool.  Details in the faces are sculpted, and then final details in robs, hands, feet, and accessories are sculpted.  The larger than life nativity statues take months to sculpt.
